Senegal. Models wearing Senegalese designer dresses wait to enter the Gala dinner banquet hall for the African Gender Awards held in Dakar, Senegal Monday 02 May 2005. The Award is given to an African leader who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in encouraging peace and development through the implementation of gender-sensitive measures. This year African women, through the non-governmental organisation Femmes Africa Solidarite (FAS), honoured both President Wade of Senegal and President Mbeki of South Africa. President Wade led the decision on the gender parity policy in the Africna Union Commission in 2002. President Mbeki, as AU Chairman in 2003, led the implementation of this decision and the adoption of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa in 2003.
